Plains Indians – wikipedia, free encyclopedia
Range of the Plains Indians at the time of European contact
Plains Indians are usually divided into two broad classifications which overlap to some degree. The first group were fully nomadic, following the vast herds of buffalo. Some tribes occasionally engaged in agriculture; growing tobacco and corn primarily. These included the Blackfoot, Arapaho, Assiniboine, Cheyenne, Comanche, Crow, Gros Ventre, Kiowa, Lakota, Lipan, Plains Apache (or Kiowa Apache), Plains Cree, Plains Ojibwe, Sarsi, Shoshone, Stoney, and Tonkawa. The second group of Plains Indians (sometimes referred to as Prairie Indians) were the semi-sedentary tribes who, in addition to hunting buffalo, lived in villages and raised crops. These included the Arikara, Hidatsa, Iowa, Kaw (or Kansa), Kitsai, Mandan, Missouria, Nez Perce, Omaha, Osage, Otoe, Pawnee, Ponca, Quapaw, Santee, Wichita, and Yankton.
Native american – Origin and Creation Tales
The ancient Native American origin myths are traditional answers, from each tribe’s perspective, to such universal questions as “Who are we? How did life begin? What is the meaning and purpose of life?” These symbolic explanations were passed on orally from one generation to the next for thousands of years and constitute one of the richest, as well as oldest, traditions in American literature.
The Hopi Creation: In the beginning there were only two: Tawa, the Sun–God, and Spider Woman, the Earth–Goddess. All the mysteries and power in the Above belonged to Tawa, while Spider Woman controlled the magic of the Below. In the Underworld, abode of the Gods, they dwelt and they were All. There was neither man nor woman, bird nor beast, no living thing until these Two willed it to be.

Native American Mythology – Myth Encyclopedia – god, story, legend …
The Native American or Indian peoples of North America do not share a single, unified body of mythology. The many different tribal groups each developed their own stories about the creation of the world, the appearance of the first people, the place of humans in the universe, and the lives and deeds of deities and heroes. Yet despite the immense variety of Native American mythologies, certain mythic themes, characters, and stories can be found in many of the cultures. Underlying all the myths is the idea that spiritual forces can be sensed through the natural world-ncluding clouds, winds, plants, and animals—that they shape and sustain. Many stories explain how the actions of gods, heroes, and ancestors gave the earth its present form.
A Small Dictionary of Pagan Gods & Goddesses
SHAKURA (Pawnee) Sun–god. The Pawnee performed their famous Sun Dance for Shakura’s sake. Young warriors attached themselves to tall poles with strips of hide which were tied to sharp stakes. The stakes were driven through the skin and flesh on the chest. The young brave would then support his entire weight with the hide ropes as he slowly circled the pole following the Sun‘s movement in the sky. This lasted until the sun went down or the stakes ripped out of the brave’s flesh.
SUN–goddess for Cherokee. When Sun’s daughter was bitten by a snake and taken to the Ghost Country, Sun hid herself in grief. The world was ever dark, and Sun‘s tears became a flood. At last the Cherokee sent their young men and women to heal Sun‘s grief, which they did with singing and dancing.

LAKOTA ETHNOASTRONOMY – SUN DANCE
Native American Folk Lore “The Sun Dance” «TIPI HEAVE»
The tribes who lived on the Great Plains of North America believed that supernatural power was to be found in everything around them. It was in the wind, rain, thunder and other forces of nature. It was in the Sun, moon and stars, and in animals and birds. The Sioux Indians called this all-pervading power Wakan Tanka, the Great Mystery. For the Sioux, it was Wakan Tanka who was the creator and controller of the universe, but other tribes had their own tales about how the world had come into being.

North American Indians: the spirituality of nature
The white buffalo was believed by the Plains Indians to be the child of Father Sun. The Indians would hang a white buffalo robe outside in the sunlight near the medicine man’s tee-pee as an offering to the Sun. Indian Chiefs carried a white buffalo robe into battle believing that it would shelter them from any harm. The Cheyenne, Mandan, and Pawnee Indians worshiped the white buffalo. They believed him to be “good medicine.” When a white buffalo was slaughtered, great care was taken so as not to anger the gods. Some of their medicine men used white robes in ceremonies to cure illness.
Crow tribe of Monatana… Native American Indian Tribes – Over 2000 …
The worship system of the Crows‘ parent tribe, the Hidatsas, was carried on by the Crows; some forms have persisted to the present day. The tribe also copied, adopted, and adapted worship practices and ceremonies from other tribes. Fasting for divine guidance as practiced by the Hidatsas was retained by the Crows, as were wound healing and other ceremonies for health maintenance, and the sweat lodge. The Crow Sun Dance, a communal worship of the Sun, was banned by federal authorities in the late 1800s, but the Shoshone Sun Dance came to the Crows in 1941 and became a popular feature of tribal life. The peyote ceremony also came from the tribes of Oklahoma in the early twentieth century.

Hopi – Crystalinks
The Hopi are a Native America Nation who primarily live on the 1.5 million acre Hopi Reservation in northeaster Arizona. The reservation is surrounded by the Navajo reservation. Hopis call themselves Hopitu – ‘The Peaceful People’. The name Hopi is the shortened form of the title to what they called themselves, “Hopituh Sinom”, “the people of Hopi”. Hopi is a concept deeply rooted in the culture’s religion, spirituality, and its view of morality and ethics. To be Hopi is to strive toward this concept, but one never achieves in this life. This concept is one where you are in a state of total reverance and respect for all things, to be at peace with these things, and to live in accordance with the teachings of ‘maasaw‘.
Hopi Legend – Maasaw
The story of Maasaw (Masau‘u) is a beautiful Hopi legend. He has been described as a man, or being (kachina), that looked like a skeleton. This is similar to the description of the “stick person” (alien), who Cherokee elder John Red Hat said came to visit him. According to Elder Red Hat, the “stick person” claimed to be his father. Maasaw gave the Hopi instructions and warnings about a way of life he wanted them to follow. He said if they followed his way, they would live long and fruitful lives. He wanted them to be humble and live like he did with only a planting stick and seeds. He wanted them to take care of, and respect the land–live in harmony with it. The Hopi lived this way for centuries, and they thrived. They lived in community and cared for each other. They planted their crops and sustained themselves. Sacred rituals were performed daily, and they never lost sight of Great Spirit. He was the embodiment of their daily lives.

In Greek mythology the Sun was personified as Helius. Homer often calls him Titan and Hyperion. He was a son of the Titans Hyperion and Theia and brother of the goddesses Selene, the moon, and Eos, the dawn. The names of these three were also the common Greek words for Sun, moon and dawn. Helios was imagined as a handsome god crowned with the shining aureole of the sun, who drove a chariot across the sky each day and night. Homer described it as drawn by solar bulls (Iliad xvi.779); later Pindar saw it as drawn by “fire-darting steeds” (Olympian Ode 7.71). Still later, the horses were given fiery names: Pyrois, Aeos, Aethon and Phlegon. As time passed, Helios was increasingly identified with the god of light, Apollo. The equivalent of Helios in Roman mythology was Sol Invictus, Latin for Sun.

The Solar Logos: The Logos Talk
The Logos represents the heart of the cosmic pattern and the source of existence, its emblem is the Sun, which is the source of life and light. For the Greeks and Romans the “Invincible Sun” was the master of all nature, creator and preserver of men.
Like God, the Sun eternally gives forth from itself without ever being diminished, thus establishing itself as the most perfect symbol of the ineffable First Cause. Common place in Hellenistic thought, if the Sun can be seen as the material reflection of the First Cause, by analogy the First Cause can be represented as the Spiritual or Intelligible Sun.

Special emphasis is placed on the Hellenistic doctrine of the “Solar Logos” and the early Christian symbolism which depicted Christ as the Spiritual Sun, the illumination source of order, harmony, and spiritual insight.
